Topic: An fMRI Hyperscanning Study on Coordination vs Competition

Abstract:
How do coordination behaviors differ from competitive behaviors? This study investigates the question through an fMRI hyperscanning experiment in which three players share the same Nash equilibrium strategy. Each player in the coordinating pair (defenders) chooses one of four possible options in an attempt to catch the opposing player (attacker), who simultaneously seeks the unchosen option. Although participants exhibited randomized choice patterns consistent with theoretical predictions, significant win-shift loss-stay (WSLS) tendencies were observed across both roles. Furthermore, players with a stronger WSLS tendency as attackers also tended to show a stronger WSLS tendency as defenders. The findings also reveal that coordinating defenders were more likely to switch choices after selecting the same option as their partner than after selecting the same option as their opponent, suggesting a stronger influence from partners.
